6 Habits of the Most Successful People

6 Habits of the Most Successful People

May 24, 2016

Running a successful nonprofit and four other businesses at the same time, left my life in shambles. Anyone who has started a business from the ground floor knows that there is no such thing as a 9-5. You are literally doing everything simultaneously.

Someone calls for your accounting department and you say, “Hold please.” Then you pop back on and ask what they want. The same thing goes for customer service, shipping, receiving, legal, manufacturing, and marketing. It is literally all you... ALL the time! I remember signing order forms saying thank you for your order and signing it as the CEO. People loved this personal touch, what they did not realize is I was the one ordering it, stocking it, putting it on the website, marketing it, collecting the money, then bagging it and shipping it to them.

Doing this for an extended period of time and deciding to do this for multiple startups simultaneously will leave you feeling drained. Really only a shell of who you originally were when you started. Not to mention, all that drive and creativity will be stifled when you don’t give you mind a chance to rest, refit, rejuvenate, and reconnect with why you started your journey in the first place. (Power of RE)

I found myself gaining weight and becoming increasingly unhealthy. I was tired all the time and had not taken any personal time in months. I realized that I had gone into a bunker with my head down just grinding away. I started to look at ways that I could better myself and accomplish my goals while not compromising my work. I started to look at successful people from all different job fields: actors, business professionals, athletes, successful people. Ok, why one is more successful than the other? What I noticed was balance, routine, and a schedule.

1.     SLEEP!

-The first thing I noticed is that all of these people go to bed relatively early between 8pm-10pm every night. Then they all wake up early between 5am-6am daily. We could get into a whole subject about sleep and what it does for your brain and recovery but we will just leave it at we need to sleep more.

2.     Physical Fitness

-They all seem to have some sort of physical fitness routine early in the morning. Wake up, have a cup of coffee, maybe a little news, and then right into a workout routine. Now this does not have to be some grueling crossfit routine, just something that keeps you active and healthy.  Not only does it release dopamine so that you feel good the rest of the day but you also immediately feel accomplished right off the start for your day.

3.     Nutrition

-Most of the more wealthy individuals all have either personal chefs preparing meals or some sort of meal service providing pre made nutritious meals. All of which are free of processed foods or foods with trans fat. They eat relatively small portions other than those in positions where their physical image is relative to their job, where they consume many more calories but essentially the same foods, meats, vegetables, and fruits.

4.     Routine

-Their day is scheduled down to the hour. Wake up, coffee, workout, eat, get ready, start work, eat, continue to work, eat, then repeat the next day. Every minute of their day is scheduled down to the minute even their refresh time is scheduled so that they got the required time to replenish the emotional, physical, and mental tank.

5.     Dress for Success

-Almost all of the people I looked at either have a stylist they use or at a minimum wear tailored clothes. This is pretty common but something I think is overlooked for a couple of reasons: It is not necessarily for other people to perceive you a certain way, even thought that is a good reason; I think the more important reason is the way it makes you feel about yourself. If you wear fitted clothes that are in style for the appropriate event or environment you will feel better about yourself. I’m sure you have put that suit or dress on and looked in the mirror and said “damn! I look good!” Imagine having that feeling every day you leave the house. You are immediately empowered for the rest of the day.

6.     Your Circle

-It has been said that your relationships have more of an impact on your health than nutrition or lifestyle. Go with me on this one. You ever left a hanging with or associating with a friend or business associate and feel mentally and emotionally exhausted? On the contrary do you have that friend or associate that you walk away feeling energized and positive? To be successful we cannot allow negative people to drain our creativity or energy. Surround yourself with people that uplift and support you. This small change in your life will make a huge difference in the way you feel and the decisions you make.

I took these steps to heart and applied them to my life. Since following them I have been healthier, happier, and my business has started to thrive even more. My relationships with my daughters, family, and friends have been much more fulfilling and supportive. I had to separate myself from some negative relationships but in doing so it opened the door for new more positive ones.

What do are some of your habits that keep you on track and our helping you towards your success?

Three months later, I suddenly went from 170lbs to 120 in 3 weeks. Turned out to be Crohn’s Disease, an auto-immune condition that attacks the G/I system. Lived in a hospital for a month+, emergency surgery to remove large intestine which doc said would have disintegrated & killed me if they waited a few more hours. Lived for 6 months with an ostomy (intestine sticking out my abdomen into a bag)
